HP a l'intention de porter Linux sur l'architecture IA64 (Merced) qu'elle développe avec Intel et de supporter Linux à la fois sur architectures Pentium et IA64. Selon une source qui préfère rester anonyme:
Hewlett-Packard Co says it plans to port the Linux operating system over to the IA-64 architecture it is co-developing with Intel Corp, and is expanding its Covision Internet Solutions program to include Linux-based applications. As part of the expansion HP has signed a strategic alliance with Red Hat Software Inc. HP said that demand for Linux applications was growing rapidly.
De son côté, SGI (Silicon Graphics) vient d'annoncer sont intention de développer sa propre distribution (``SGI wants to do more than just throw a CD in the box. We want to be part of the open source community, and we hope the community understands that'', selon Dave McAllister, strategic technologist for SGI). SGI envisage de proposer sous Linux le même niveau de support (et notamment sur Samba qui est maintenant un produit maison) que pour NT et Irix.
